In the LGBT community, suicide continues to be a persistent problem -- Among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, as many as 40% are likely to attempt suicide, three times more likely to attempt suicide than straight people -- Some of the reasons are,

Society: Discrimination/oppression of gays and lesbians by society.

Poor Self Esteem: Internalization of society%26#039;s notions of LGBTs as sick, self destructive, sinful, spreaders of disease, molesters of children, and pathetic.

Identity Conflicts: Denial of same-sex feelings or orientation. Despair in recognition of same-sex orientation.

Family: Perceived or actual rejection, abuse, harassment of child due to LGBT orientation. Child%26#039;s feelings of failure to meet parental/societal expectations.

Religion: Child%26#039;s LGBT orientation seen as incompatible with family%26#039;s religious beliefs in which youths feel sinful or condemned.

School: Harassed and/or abused by peers (and sometimes faculty and staff). Lack of supportive peers and adults, role models, and accurate information about LGBT life in the classroom.

Social Isolation: Stemming from rejection or fear of rejection by peers and family, social withdrawal, loneliness, and inability to meet others like themselves.

The gay TEEN suicide rate IS higher than the suicide rate for heterosexual TEENS.

Why? For the same reason Matthew Shepard was hung on a fence and left to die. People hate us and teens have enough on their plate with puberty, hormones, dating, school, etc. that to have to worry about sexual orientation and acceptance is sometimes more than they can bear. They are pariahs of the community. Family, friends, clergy and society in general tell them they are abominations.

Let%26#039;s have a heterosexual teen (or adult for that matter) live life as one of us for a week and see how badly THEY want to end it.. walking a mile in another%26#039;s shoes can work wonders.

Well i k that many LGBT people suicide because they feel alone and depressed a lot more then a regular person would.It%26#039;s hard for us to get used to i think.And sometimes theres the fact that no one understands or supports them.But there is hope in hot lines and freinds who accept others.

Because of homophobes, religious extremists, and unaccepting friends and parents. They make them think that they are an abomination and that they would be better off dead, so they do it.

you come out, your friends start treating you like you have a disease, your parents look at you and want to know where they went wrong, you lose your job, you lose your life, soon if you don%26#039;t surround yourself with others like you, you suicide

Maybe it%26#039;s a little harder for them to be accepted. If they%26#039;re just finding out about themselves, they are likely pretty confused. I%26#039;m guessing it%26#039;s different for different sexuallities at different schools. In middle school, I had this friend that everyone was accusing of being gay. I knew for a fact he wasn%26#039;t but people weren%26#039;t very nice to him. I assume he wasn%26#039;t very happy because he had other problems in his life too like grades, parents, etc. I%26#039;m just guessing but things like that may be the reason for more suicides.
